This webinar explains the three different funding options that ACT Missouri offers to registered coalitions – mini-grants funds, technical assistance and consultant funds, and regional development funds. Also, we outlined some new changes to documentation and reporting requirements. Helping Youth Take Control (HYTC) STD Prevention
Young people need to know the facts about STDs/STIs and how to protect themselves from getting infected. Helping Youth Take Control addresses the topics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs/STIs), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), including signs and symptoms, modes of transmission and prevention efforts.
After receiving prevention messages from HYTC, viewers will be able to:
- Describe how STDs/STIs are transmitted.
- Describe the types of symptoms STDs/STIs produce.
- Describe the importance of seeking treatment for STDs/STIs.

Helping Youth Take Control Hepatitis C Prevention
Hepatitis C can be a serious consequence of substance abuse. The most common risk factor for new Hepatitis C infections is sharing drug use equipment. In order to provide proactive prevention efforts in Missouri’s communities, it is imperative that those that work with youth have all the facts. Not For Sale: Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention
Human Trafficking is a topic that has seized international attention, as there are an estimated 27 million people enslaved today—more than at any point in human history. The average age of entry into prostitution for a child victim in the United States is between 12-14 years old. Missouri is not exempt from this atrocious crime, but instead has seen several cases, some of which were directly linked to drug use. This presentation will educate you on what defines human trafficking, data on the prevalence of the issue, methods of recruitment and control, how trafficking is influenced and perpetuated by substance abuse, and how to connect with the issue in a local community.

The Science of Addiction
Dr. Jennifer Lowry presents “The Science of Addiction”in celebration of National Drug Facts Week. Addiction is a disease that starts by making a choice. Unfortunately, that choice can result in long term consequences in which a person’s ability to exert self control can become seriously impaired. The vulnerability to addiction differs from person to person, but can be influenced by the age of the person. In fact, surveys of adolescents show that drug use starts early and can continue into adulthood. This presentation will discuss the how substances can affect the brain to the point of becoming a priority for the person. Additionally, drugs used in adolescents will be discussed so as to promote discussions with teens about the choice they make.
