Protecting Our Youth: Marijuana in Missouri

The potential legalization of marijuana is a pressing reality Missourians must face. With only a month to go before we find out whether or not marijuana will show up on the ballots this fall, now is the time for action. Join us in this presentation to learn more about the ballot initiatives and how you can rally your community members to work towards halting the pro-marijuana campaign. Presenter Zach Thornhill, a three-time national debate qualifier, will also discuss how to respond to difficult questions you might receive from audience members who are familiar with the pro-marijuana rhetoric.  You’ll leave this presentation with the materials and knowledge you need to begin or advance a grassroots campaign to inform community organizations about the harmful effects of marijuana and what its legalization would do to our youth and our community.

Main presenter: Zach Thornhill, Lee’s Summit CARES

Zach is a senior at Lee’s Summit West High School. He is a member of the coalition Lee’s Summit CARES in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Zach occupies his time at school in IB classes, debating, playing football, shooting trap, singing in concert choir, and overseeing the German Honor Society as its president. He is a three time national debate tournament qualifier and a state football champion. Outside of school Zach enjoys hunting, fishing, trapping or anything outside. He also enjoys watching sports, especially the Kansas City Royals, with his friends. Zach plans on attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall. There he will continue his debate career and pursue a major in the field of criminal justice before attending law school in order to become a prosecuting attorney.

Marijuana: What’s the Big Deal?

This interactive workshop will allow participants to discuss the opinions that are most commonly shared among young people who have a low perception of risk regarding marijuana. The roundtable discussions will be followed by five targeted facts about the impact of this drug on the brain, mental health issues, use by teens, medicinal efficacy, and public health.

Main Presenter: Julie Hook, NCADA-STL

Julie Hook is a Prevention Specialist with the Eastern Regional Support Center at NCADA. She works with community coalitions in Warren, Franklin and St. Charles Counties to help implement Substance Abuse Prevention initiatives in those communities. Julie and her husband Fred live in Washington, Missouri, and have two daughters, Emily and Abigail. Their family also includes two dogs, two cats, and seven fish.

The Other Side of Cannabis

We are excited to announce that Jody Belsher, the Director/Producer of The Other Side of Cannabis: Negative Effects of Marijuana on our Youth will be at the 2015 Prevention Conference! She will be presenting the film and answering questions.

The Other Side of Cannabis is an independent film project created by ordinary citizens with no political or economic affiliations or interests, other than bringing attention to the negative effects of marijuana on our youth–adolescents, teenagers and young adults whose brains are still forming.

They are reaching out to our youth, as well as educators, medical and health professionals, researchers, and media, in addition to recovery and treatment center programs, behavioral health departments, law enforcement, and others who influence our youth. In order to make an informed decision to use marijuana, it is important to know the potential risks. This film is not about legalization nor medicinal treatments. While there may be times when components of marijuana are appropriate to use medicinally under proper medical guidance, the message that marijuana is safe, natural and harmless as a recreational substance, must be weighed against the evidence of associated risks.

*You will be required to wear your name tag to each session, keynote, and meal.
